Full Bio: Peter Thornton is the proprietor of Peter Thornton Associates, a consultancy business which does work for family business and non-family business at a strategic level.

He is the author of ‘Thorntons – My Life in the Family Business’. This book covers his life story, his whole experience in the family business and the story of the family business from its foundation in 1911 until the date that he left in 1987. The book reads like a novel and is a page-turner for the everyday reader, the businessman and the family businessman alike.

He was educated at Repton School in Derbyshire and his theoretical confectionery knowledge was obtained by qualifications in the subject at what is now the London South Bank University and was then the Borough Polytechnic. His human relations and management training was obtained from two years National Service in the ranks, six years in the TA as an officer and years working on the shopfloor at Thorntons, many courses, much reading and an IOD qualification .

Over a period of nearly 35 years he occupied almost every management role in Thorntons, leaving in 1987 as a result of a Board Room Coup as Chairman. Since that time he has been involved in small entrepreneurial business and consultancy. In his private life he became a major in the Territorial Army, was involved in many charities and has enjoyed sailing, skiing, flying helicopters, languages, renovating old houses, classical music, self-education, reading, writing and family.

He is currently involved in three new business start-ups together with specialist partners.

Peter at 78 finds life exciting, stimulating and wonderful and still always wants to do new things. This is his first book and the book which he has wanted to write for years, he is now working on further books. He has forsaken the North Midlands and now lives happily in East Devon with his family.
